Estimator
A construction estimator in the building industry calculates and prepares tender submissions for their employer, working out what a contract will cost to deliver whilst ensuring it returns a profit. Tender prices are prepared from architects drawings and detailed specifications provided by the client.
Typical Estimating work activities include:
- working with a quantity surveyor to estimate the type and amount of materials necessary to deliver the contract against the agreed specifications;
- estimating the cost of plant and equipment;
- working with a site manager and planning engineer to help predict the timescales of a project, which has a considerable bearing on costs;
- establishing the likely progress and completion rates, including allowances for bad weather and other unforeseen circumstances;
- calculating a final figure for the estimated cost, supplemented by adjustments for overheads and profit, and presenting a tender price
- Estimating can be a demanding role due to the need to meet tight deadlines and ultimately win work for your employer, responsibility of which is heightened during an uncertain economic climate. Work is predominantly office-based, although there is a requirement to visit sites and clients’ premises
- Most opportunities are with contractors and subcontractors. A smaller number of estimators work for consultancies.
