We are looking for a Design Manager to take up a role in the Cumbria region. It’s for a role with a national contractor that has just won a couple of new projects. They are looking for construction professionals to join the team within this forward thinking building contractor.


As a Design Manager, you are responsible for managing, reviewing and coordinating projects from a design perspective, at both Tender and Execution phase, ensuring deliverables meet project objectives.

These roles will be based in the Cumbria region and will report to the Construction Director.

Your main tasks and accountabilities will be:

  • Implementing company processes in management of design in Tender & Execution Phase Projects in support of Tender and / or Project Managers
  • Creating stability in the design process & deliverables through management of design scope, schedule, resources and costs.
  • Assessing and motivating the most suitable design organisation for the project at hand, ensuring scope of work is covered adequately
  • Selecting & aligning procurement & collaborating with design consultants to meet project objectives
  • Managing the design cost account to ensure stability and clarity in the process
  • Gathering, analysing & managing design information, functional & performance requirements
  • Managing the design process to meet quality requirements – provision of design management plans, execute and follow up on RFI Process, Site Query Process with stakeholders
  • Providing advice & support to projects as required to meet project objectives
  • Interpreting design requirements and managing changes to meet project objectives
  • Identifying & assessing alternative design solutions through use of option analyses
  • Initiating, coordinating & leading reviews – design, constructability, safety & geotechnical reviews as required by company processes
  • Contributing to risk management on projects to ensure proper diligent approaches
  • Managing, coaching & guiding engineers on the design team where applicable

Job Requirements:

As Design Manager, you have the following qualifications and competencies:

  • Architectural Degree, Engineering or Construction qualification (related qualifications).
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Must have considerable experience working on large scale projects.
  • 10 years Design & Build (D&B) experience representing the contractor
  • Effective communication skills (both written & verbal)
  • Analytical, processed oriented, result driven
  • Commercially astute – able to link technical & commercial landscapes in projects
  • Team player, indicates flexibility, ability to work on multiple projects at times
  • Flexibility to adapt to diverse site circumstances
