# What does a Commercial Director earn at a UK contractor?

The 2026 band, the package around it, and what moves it.

**A regional Commercial Director at a Tier 1 or large Tier 2 UK contractor earns £130,000 to £175,000 base in 2026, with a car allowance, a bonus of 15 to 30 per cent and an employer pension of 8 to 12 per cent on top.**

## The numbers

| Seat | Base salary, 2026 |
| --- | --- |
| Commercial Director, regional | £130,000 to £175,000 |
| Group Commercial Director | Around £185,000 |
| Senior commercial seats, programmes above £500 million | Inside the £115,000 to £240,000 programme band |
| Senior Commercial Manager, major London scheme | £100,000 to £120,000 |

- **Car or car allowance:** £7,000 to £12,000.
- **Employer pension:** 8 to 12 per cent.
- **Performance bonus:** 15 to 30 per cent of base, formula-driven at the better businesses and discretionary at the rest.
- **Programme level:** total packages of £300,000 and above for the senior commercial seats on programmes above £500 million.

## In more detail

Scale moves the number more than anything. A Commercial Director on a £50 million scheme and a Senior Commercial Director on a £1.7 billion hospital programme share a title and nothing else, and the second is paid roughly double the first. Specialist and data centre contractors pay above the regional range, and London sits at the top of it.

Compare total package, not base. A formula bonus tied to margin or project outcome is worth more than a larger discretionary one, and a move that adds ten per cent to base and drops a formula bonus for a discretionary one is not a rise. These bands are from the retained searches I ran in 2026, checked against the published surveys, and a specific role is benchmarked against the live market before every search.

## Common questions

### What does a Group Commercial Director earn?

Around £185,000 base in 2026 searches, with car, bonus and pension on top and a long-term incentive plan at group level.

### What does a Senior Commercial Manager earn?

On a major London scheme, £100,000 to £120,000 base in 2026. It is the seat most Commercial Directors step up from.

### Why do the salary surveys show lower figures?

They describe a different job. Glassdoor's May 2026 average for a construction director is £94,671, an average across everyone from the director of a £20 million regional builder to the leader of a billion-pound programme. The retained market starts roughly where that survey's top decile, £218,585, ends.

### Do specialist and data centre contractors pay more?

Yes. Specialist and data centre contractors pay above the regional range for the experience they need, and London sits at the top of it.

## Benchmark the role, not the title

If you are setting a package for a Commercial Director, or weighing one you have been offered, I will tell you where it sits against the live market. No hard sell, no obligation.
