We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Construction Design and Build Technician Apprentice. This apprenticeship will last for three years and will involve bespoke training for future Design Managers, on-the-job mentoring, and local college attendance when not fully supported on-site.

What you will be studying

You will work towards achieving a Level 4 Construction Design and Build Technician Apprenticeship qualification through a combination of college coursework and practical work-based experience.

Academic Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C (4-9) in Maths, English Language, and a Science – Essential, or

  • A Level 2 Apprenticeship

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing innovative design solutions that meet client briefs, collaborating with the professional design team and subcontractors.

  • Build and maintain relationships with clients during the early concept stages, managing project expectations through regular communication about requirements and specifications.

  • Identify and verify contents for Contractors Proposals, qualifications lists, design information, and marketing documentation to accompany tenders.

  • Stay updated on the latest construction techniques and legislation.

  • Continuously review designs to identify potential interface problems and practicalities in construction, resolving issues as appropriate.

  • Assist in ensuring the smooth handover of projects to the project team, providing essential support throughout operational delivery.

  • Manage document control and assist in the preparation of information schedules.

  • Attend contractor selection interviews, preparing documentation beforehand.

  • Contribute to revising bid documentation to identify risks, opportunities, insufficient information, inadequate or incorrect designs, and compliance issues.

  • Attend meetings as required; record minutes and actions, ensuring implementation.

  • Assist in producing monthly reports as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong numeracy skills with the ability to learn sophisticated design/construction IT packages.

  • The ability to read and understand construction drawings (training will be provided).

  • Excellent written communication skills to produce clear reports and convey complex information simply to diverse audiences.

  • A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop professionally.

  • Self-motivation with a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.

  • Attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Practical and logical qualities with a methodical approach to problem-solving.

  • Strong communication skills.

Additional Information

A full UK driving licence is advantageous for this role. Expect exciting travel opportunities to various construction sites and project locations.

Career Progression

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there are opportunities for career advancement including:

  • Progressing to a Level 6 Degree level apprenticeship

  • Becoming a fully qualified Design Manager

  • Pursuing professional qualifications with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB)
