Position: Environmental Engineer

Location: Helsinki, Finland

Overview:

A leading provider of comprehensive data centre solutions across Europe is seeking an Environmental Engineer to join their team in Helsinki. This role involves ensuring environmental compliance and promoting sustainable practices on construction sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site environmental inspections and collaborate with the Environmental Manager and EHS Lead.

  • Perform site assessments with supervisors, document findings, and agree on corrective actions with realistic timelines.

  • Compile monthly reports on environmental incidents and resolutions.

  • Investigate incidents and ensure closure of any non-compliance issues.

  • Audit permits and manage the site-based complaints system.

  • Monitor and report on waste management, promoting waste reduction and awareness.

  • Ensure protection of drains and watercourses, taking action to maintain clean water discharges.

  • Identify spill kit needs and provide necessary training.

  • Represent the company during client environmental inspections and meetings, ensuring follow-up on findings.

  • Oversee medium to high-risk tasks on-site, promoting best practices and sharing lessons learned.

  • Assist the Environmental Manager in client meetings and decision-making processes.

  • Halt operations if poor practices are identified.

  • Maintain environmental information on site noticeboards for staff and the public.

  • Deliver toolbox talks on environmental best practices and social sensitivities.

  • Conduct emergency practice scenarios with the H&S and Site Manager, identifying and addressing weaknesses.

  • Collaborate with the H&S Site Officer to manage overlapping risks.

  • Contribute to updating the Construction Environmental Management Plan, aligning with client and corporate sustainability goals.

  • Review construction methods to ensure environmental risks are mitigated.

  • Work with the Client LEED practitioner to achieve LEED Gold certification.

  • Foster a strong environmental culture and drive initiatives on the project.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree or qualification in Environmental Science or a related field.

  • In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and management.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the construction industry.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic construction environment.

  • Experience in site supervision is advantageous.

  • Familiarity with high-tech, industrial, pharmaceutical, or data centre projects is beneficial but not required.
