Healthcare construction executive search is the work of placing senior commercial and operational leaders into the organisations delivering the UK's healthcare and education infrastructure, from the New Hospital Programme through to university campus developments and school building frameworks. It is retained, research led and handled personally, from brief to placement.
Healthcare Construction Executive Search

Live environments, phased delivery, framework discipline.

What this sector asks of its leaders
Three things separate healthcare and education delivery from private commercial work, and all three show up in the brief before they show up on site.
Complex stakeholder management. A public sector client is not a single client with a single view. The leader has to hold a position across a client body that has several of them, and keep the programme moving while that position is being agreed.
Framework compliance. Framework compliance is one of the particular demands of public sector delivery, and the commercial discipline it takes is a specific skill rather than a general one. Someone who has run packages inside a framework knows where the flexibility sits and where it does not.
Phased construction within live environments. Building around an estate that stays in use is a different job from building on a clear site, and the leadership it takes is different too.
A leader who has only ever delivered on private schemes may be excellent and still have met none of the three. Establishing which of them a person has actually done, rather than which they can describe, is the point of the assessment.
The roles I recruit here
Commercial Director, Project Director, Frameworks Director, Operations Director and Programme Director are the appointments this sector makes most often.
Around them sit the wider senior roles I recruit across construction: Managing Director, Pre-Construction Director, Managing Quantity Surveyor, Head of Commercial and Chief Operating Officer, along with group board appointments.
How the search runs here
The process is the same one I run for every senior appointment, described in full on construction executive search. What changes in healthcare is the target universe.
The brief comes first: the real requirement, the target organisations, and the profile that will succeed in your business. Then the mapping, which is a complete picture of who holds the equivalent role across that universe, with named individuals, current remit, reporting line and likely motivation. Every approach is made personally and confidentially. The shortlist is four to six, each with a written appraisal covering capability, motivation and risk, and it names the reservations as well as the strengths.
I am a qualified Quantity Surveyor who worked as a Commercial Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine before moving into search, so the brief gets interrogated by someone who has run the packages and sat in the commercial meetings. Senior people take the call for the same reason.
Common questions
What is healthcare construction executive search?
It is a retained, research-led process for appointing senior leaders into the organisations delivering healthcare and education infrastructure. Rather than advertising a vacancy, I map the market, identify everyone holding an equivalent role, and approach them directly and confidentially. It is used where the appointment is business critical and the right person is almost never actively looking.
Which roles do you recruit in healthcare construction?
Commercial Director, Project Director, Frameworks Director, Operations Director and Programme Director are the typical appointments, along with the senior commercial and operational leadership that sits beneath them.
What makes healthcare programmes different to recruit for?
Public sector delivery carries its own demands: complex stakeholder management, framework compliance, and phased construction within live environments. A leader who has only worked on private commercial schemes has not had to manage any of the three, which is what the assessment has to establish rather than assume.
How long does a healthcare director search take?
A typical retained search runs six to eight weeks from briefing to offer acceptance, then notice period on top. Mapping and approach take the first three weeks, first-stage interviews around week four, with shortlist and final stages following.
