Water sector executive search is the work of placing senior leadership into water, wastewater and utilities programmes, including AMP8 delivery, alongside port infrastructure and coastal defence. It is retained, research led and handled personally, from brief to placement.
Water Sector Executive Search

Regulated, long dated, asset led.

What this sector asks of its leaders
The constraints in this sector are not the ones a building programme sets, and they shape who succeeds in a senior role.
Environmental regulation. It sits inside the programme rather than beside it, so a director here is making commercial decisions with regulatory limits already on the table.
Physical constraint. Tidal constraints and the conditions that come with marine and coastal schemes are a constant on these schemes, and the planning discipline that demands is a specific one.
The asset management perspective. These clients take a long-term asset management view of what gets built. They judge a programme on what it costs to run, not only on what it costs to deliver, and the leaders who do well here think the same way.
Experienced directors and senior managers who understand all of that are why the mapping matters more here than the advertising ever could.
The roles I recruit here
Project Director, Commercial Director, Operations Director, Engineering Director and Programme Director are the appointments this sector makes most often.
Around them sit the wider senior roles I recruit across construction: Managing Director, Pre-Construction Director, Managing Quantity Surveyor, Head of Commercial and Chief Operating Officer, along with group board appointments.
How the search runs here
The process is the same one I run for every senior appointment, described in full on construction executive search. What changes in water and utilities is the target universe and what the assessment has to test.
The brief comes first: the real requirement, the target organisations, and the profile that will succeed in your business. Then the mapping, a complete picture of who holds the equivalent role across that universe, with named individuals, current remit, reporting line and likely motivation. Every approach is made personally and confidentially. The shortlist is four to six, each with a written appraisal covering capability, motivation and risk, and it names the reservations as well as the strengths.
I am a qualified Quantity Surveyor who worked as a Commercial Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine before moving into search. Senior people take the call because the conversation is credible.
Common questions
What is water sector executive search?
It is a retained, research-led process for appointing senior leaders into water, wastewater and utilities programmes. The market is mapped completely, the people holding equivalent roles are approached directly and confidentially, and the shortlist is assessed rather than filtered from a database.
Which roles do you recruit in the water sector?
Project Director, Commercial Director, Operations Director, Engineering Director and Programme Director are the typical appointments across water, wastewater, utilities and marine programmes.
Does marine and coastal work sit alongside water?
Yes. Port infrastructure and coastal defence come from the same pool of senior leadership as water and wastewater, and the constraints overlap: environmental regulation, tidal working, and clients who think in asset lifetimes rather than scheme durations.
What does a retained search cost?
Retained search is typically charged as a percentage of the appointed leader's first-year total package, invoiced in stages across the assignment. My fee is 22.5%, agreed in full at the outset with no variation later.

If you are building leadership for an AMP8 programme or a wider utilities portfolio, I would welcome the chance to talk. No hard sell, no obligation.
