Rail executive search is the work of placing senior leaders into the UK's major rail and transport programmes, including HS2. I work across rail, bridges, tunnels and complex civils delivery, and the search is retained, research led and handled personally from brief to placement.
Rail Executive Search

HS2 and the programmes around it.

What this sector asks of its leaders
Rail asks for two things at once, and most senior people are stronger on one than the other.
Technical credibility. The engineering is not a background detail here. A leader who cannot hold a technical conversation with the people delivering the work loses the room, and loses it quickly.
Commercial and operational leadership. The same person has to keep the scheme on programme and on budget, through a contract structure and a client interface that are rarely simple.
Finding both in one person is the search. Establishing which of the two is the real strength, and being honest with a client about the gap, is the part of the assessment that matters most.
The roles I recruit here
Project Director, Commercial Director, Operations Director, Regional Director, Construction Director and Chief Engineer are the appointments these programmes make most often.
Around them sit the wider senior roles I recruit across construction: Managing Director, Pre-Construction Director, Managing Quantity Surveyor, Head of Commercial and Chief Operating Officer, along with group board appointments.
How the search runs here
The process is the same one I run for every senior appointment, described in full on construction executive search. What changes in rail is the target universe and how narrow the technical requirement can make it.
The brief comes first: the real requirement, the target organisations, and the profile that will succeed in your business. Then the mapping, a complete picture of who holds the equivalent role across that universe, with named individuals, current remit, reporting line and likely motivation. Every approach is made personally and confidentially. The shortlist is four to six, each with a written appraisal covering capability, motivation and risk, and it names the reservations as well as the strengths.
I am a qualified Quantity Surveyor who worked as a Commercial Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine before moving into search, so the brief gets interrogated by someone who has run the packages rather than read the job spec back to you.
Common questions
What is rail executive search?
It is a retained, research-led process for appointing senior leaders into rail and major transport infrastructure. Rather than advertising a vacancy, I map the market, identify everyone holding an equivalent role, and approach them directly and confidentially.
Which roles do you recruit in rail?
Project Director, Commercial Director, Operations Director, Regional Director, Construction Director and Chief Engineer are the typical appointments across rail, bridges, tunnels and complex civils delivery.
Do you place leaders working on HS2?
Yes. I place senior leaders into the organisations operating on HS2 and on major transport and utilities infrastructure.
How long does a rail director search take?
A typical retained search runs six to eight weeks from briefing to offer acceptance, then notice period on top. Mapping and approach take the first three weeks, first-stage interviews around week four, with shortlist and final stages following.
