Construction Manager - Heritage Refurbishment, Manchester

Location
Manchester, England
Contract Type
Permanent, full-time
  • Location: Manchester city centre, site based
  • Positions: 2
  • Contract: Permanent (freelance or contract considered)
  • Package: Highly competitive, details on application

The scheme

One of the most significant heritage refurbishments in the UK: a Grade I listed landmark in Manchester city centre being restored and brought back into use, with a tier-one main contractor delivering the works.

This is a live, complex project in a constrained city-centre setting. The work sits inside historic fabric that has to be protected, understood and respected at every stage.

The role

The contractor is appointing two Construction Managers, working at senior site manager level and reporting to the Project Managers. Each will take ownership of packages of internal works and see them through from start to completion.

You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering interior fit out packages to programme, cost and quality.
  • Managing cut and carve works: structural openings, alterations and strip-out within the existing historic fabric.
  • Leading internal refurbishment of listed spaces, working closely with conservation and heritage specialists.
  • Managing subcontractors and specialist trades on site, including sequencing, coordination and interfaces between packages.
  • Coordinating temporary works with the temporary works team and making sure the interfaces are safe and properly controlled.
  • Setting and maintaining high standards of health, safety, quality and protection of the existing building.
  • Planning logistics in a busy city-centre location with limited access and storage.
  • Reporting progress, risks and issues to the Project Managers.

What the client is looking for

  • A Senior Site Manager or Construction Manager with a main contractor background.
  • Proven experience in interior fit out, cut and carve and internal refurbishment.
  • Experience on historic or listed buildings is a strong advantage.
  • A careful, organised approach to working in sensitive existing buildings.
  • Strong subcontractor management and the ability to sequence complex internal works.
  • SMSTS, CSCS Black Card and First Aid at Work. A relevant construction qualification or MCIOB is an advantage.
  • Based in the North West, within commuting distance of Manchester city centre.

Why this role

  • A rare chance to work on one of the UK's landmark Grade I listed buildings.
  • Long-term work: the contractor has a strong pipeline across the North West, including further heritage and healthcare schemes, so there is a clear future beyond this one.
  • A tier-one contractor with a strong reputation in complex and heritage projects.
